Akufo-Addo Inaugurates New Oil and Gas Services Terminal

adminBy adminNovember 25, 2024Updated:November 25, 2024

By Alex Ababio

President Nana Akufo-Addo has described the establishment of the new Oil and Gas Services Terminal as a significant step toward solidifying Ghana’s status as a symbol of economic resilience.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony at the Port of Takoradi, the President noted that the Terminal serves as a vital gateway providing a comprehensive range of essential resources for offshore activities. He highlighted its role in bolstering Ghana’s operations in the oil and gas sector.

President Akufo-Addo referred to the facility, named the *31 Times Football Park Services Terminal*, as a “bold testament” to the nation’s economic advancement and its emergence as a hub for upstream business.

“This critical investment in the sector affirms our commitment to enhancing economic opportunities for all Ghanaians,” he said.

The Terminal, a transformative addition to operations at the Port of Takoradi, was initiated by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in October 2022 with funding from the government.

The $100,007,246.86 project was executed by China Harbour Engineering Company, with GTYD Group Limited providing consultancy services. The development involved reclaiming 20 hectares of sealand, dredging 752,045 m³, improving the ground, building storage yards, constructing concrete roads, and installing water supply systems, sewage networks, power lines, and communication ducts.

The President emphasized that the Port’s upgrade would increase its competitiveness, foster greater integration within the Sub-Region, and drive economic growth.

Transport Minister Kweku Ofori Asiamah thanked President Akufo-Addo for facilitating several infrastructure projects, noting that the new Terminal, together with existing facilities at Takoradi, would enhance maritime business in the area.

GPHA’s Director General, Mr. Michael Luguje, declared that the vision of transforming the Port from a mere export point into a competitive, multifunctional hub has been fulfilled. He stressed that the Port is now well-equipped to handle significant cargo volumes and containers.

Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, hailed the project’s completion as a milestone in port operations and economic growth. He expressed appreciation to the President for fostering an environment conducive to the oil and gas industry’s growth.

He also urged stakeholders to prioritize safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability as the Port expands its operations and impacts livelihoods.

The new Terminal boasts a 550-meter quay wall, a 10-meter deep draft, and a 200,000 m² serviced area for oilfield operators, logistics service providers, offices, workshops, and storage facilities.

Designed to establish a state-of-the-art shore-based logistics platform, the Terminal features offshore supply vessel berthing facilities and a serviced waterfront area to support oil and gas exploration and production activities.
