Ashanti REGSEC Tightens Security in Asawase After Deadly Attacks

adminBy adminAugust 23, 2025

By Alex Ababio

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has reinforced security in Asawase and other hotspots in Kumasi following a wave of deadly shootings that have left residents in fear. The move comes after the murder of the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and another man in separate attacks, sparking widespread concerns over public safety.

Background: Two Murders That Shook Asawase

On July 22, 2025, Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief, was gunned down outside his home by assailants on a motorbike wielding an AK-47 rifle. Just three days later, on July 25, another man was fatally shot in a similar motorbike-enabled attack. These chilling incidents have triggered panic and cast a shadow over Asawase’s once vibrant community life.

REGSEC’s Crackdown and New Security Measures

In response, REGSEC launched a security crackdown on August 1, deploying police and military patrols across Asawase and the Asokore Mampong Municipality. The measures include:

Checkpoints with stop-and-search operations

Ban on motorbike use after 7 p.m.

Impoundment of motorbikes violating restrictions

Intelligence-led police operations leading to the seizure of weapons linked to recent crimes

Minister’s Assurance of Safety

At a press briefing on August 22, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who chairs the security council, assured the public of continued vigilance.

“We have put up a robust system to combat the peculiar situation we’re confronted with. As and when we identify new hotspots, we do the deployment. By and large, after the intervention by REGSEC and the Interior Ministry, we have been able to have good control of the security situation in the region, so we’re safe,” he stated.

Residents Demand Lasting Peace

Despite these efforts, the killers remain at large. Community leaders and residents are urging stronger collaboration with law enforcement to restore calm. Many locals say the night-time motorbike ban and checkpoints have already reduced fear, but they insist on more long-term strategies to secure Asawase.

Restoring Trust in the Community

Asawase, known for its rich cultural vibrancy and strong community spirit, is now struggling to overcome the trauma of these violent incidents. The Ashanti Regional Security Council’s sustained security presence is seen as vital to preventing further unrest and rebuilding trust between residents and law enforcement.

Outlook: Hope for Justice and Safety

Police have pledged a thorough investigation into the murders and remain confident that justice will be served. For now, residents of Asawase and surrounding areas remain hopeful that the heightened security and intelligence-led policing will bring an end to the violence and ensure a safer environment for all.
