adminBy adminJuly 28, 2025Updated:July 29, 2025

On Monday, July 28, 2025, shortly after 2:30 p.m., tragedy struck the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi–Accra highway, when a Ford Transit bus transporting youth members of the Saviour Church of Ghana collided head‑on with a fuel tanker travelling in the opposite direction .

According to church elder Kofi Baah, who rushed to the scene, “We rushed to the Yawkwei Steward Hospital after hearing the news, only to find out our beloved members had passed away.” He confirmed that the deceased included the children of their pastor, some families losing two or even three young members . Tragically, over a dozen lives were lost, and four others sustained serious injuries in the crash .

One bystander recounted tense moments at the scene: “The tanker’s tyre burst while overtaking, and it veered into the Transit right in front of us,” highlighting the suddenness of the tragedy .

The victims were returning from their church’s annual meeting in the Eastern Region, journeying back to Obogu in Asante Akyem South Municipality .

Sources state the tanker’s tyre blew out while overtaking, causing it to lose control and strike the bus head-on, causing catastrophic damage

Emergency responders—including the Ghana National Fire Service, MTTD, and ambulance teams from Juaso and Konongo—were dispatched promptly to rescue survivors, clear the wreckage, and transfer the injured to hospital .

The deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue while rescue operations continue for the injured .

“I was walking nearby when I heard a huge crash. The bus was mangled, the engine had been torn out. I saw flames and people screaming. It was horrific,” one witness shared in disbelief.
