Mahama Rewards Sikaman-Brofoyedu Heroes with GHS100k After Tragic Ghana Military Helicopter Crash

By Alex Ababio

President John Dramani Mahama has honoured 13 residents of Sikaman-Brofoyedu in the Adansi Akrofrom District with a cash donation of GHS100,000. The recognition comes after their courageous role in recovering the bodies of eight high-profile officials who perished in the August 6, 2025 military helicopter crash at the Dampia Range Forest Reserve.

NDC Chairman Conveys Presidential Gratitude

Representing the President, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, visited the community on Wednesday, August 27, to deliver the government’s appreciation package and extend Mahama’s personal gratitude.

“The President has asked me to represent him and thank the residents who helped us recover the bodies of our eight men. We have a plaque for all of you in honour of what you did,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said.

He further announced: “The President is also giving you GHS100,000 for what you did for the country. For the rites left to be done, the President is also giving the chiefs GHS20,000. Whatever will be left behind, let your DCEs and party chairmen know so we clear those.”

Crash Claims Lives of Top Government Officials

The military helicopter crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others. The victims were on official government duty at the time of the accident.

Additional Support for Chiefs and Community

Aside from the GHS100,000 cash reward to the rescuers, the Adansi Traditional Council also received GHS20,000 to support cultural and funeral rites.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah revealed that all 13 individuals involved in the recovery exercise would be offered jobs suited to their skills, adding that the gesture was not only a reward but also a step to secure their livelihoods.

Road Infrastructure Promise

The President also pledged to address the poor road network in Sikaman-Brofoyedu, promising to begin work on improving accessibility in the area.

“President Mahama has also assured to fix your road,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah emphasized.

Acknowledging Sacrifice and Bravery

The support package is being described as a historic recognition of local bravery and sacrifice during a moment of national grief. Many Ghanaians see the gesture as both a humanitarian response and a symbol of the government’s commitment to communities that rise in times of crisis.
