Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is leading the race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2028 presidential flagbearer position, according to a fresh Global InfoAnalytics poll. The survey places him ahead of other contenders, solidifying his status as the party’s frontrunner for the next leadership contest.
The survey results indicate that 57% of NPP supporters prefer the former Vice President to lead the party once again, reinforcing his dominant position within the party.
Currently contesting as the NPP’s candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia commands 48% of the total vote in a hypothetical 2028 primary race. His closest competitor, Kennedy Agyapong, garners 25%, while Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum secures 13%. Other contenders collectively receive 14%.
Within the party’s core base, Bawumia’s lead widens significantly—he secures 57% support, compared to 22% for Kennedy Agyapong and 11% for Dr. Adutwum.
Bawumia’s Growing Influence in NPP Ahead of 2028
The poll suggests that Dr. Bawumia’s influence in the NPP extends beyond the 2024 elections, solidifying his reputation as the party’s future leader. His tenure as Vice President and current role as the NPP’s flagbearer have strengthened his appeal among party loyalists, positioning him as the top contender for the 2028 race.
Adwoa Safo Endorses Bawumia for 2028
Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has thrown her full support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting that he deserves another chance to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, March 20, Adwoa Safo dismissed concerns about Bawumia’s popularity, arguing that Ghana’s political history proves that many successful leaders did not win on their first attempt.
“We will bring Dr. Bawumia back as flagbearer for the NPP. He is the best person to lead the party. We have marketed him before, and we will market him again. Everyone deserves a second chance,” she stated.
Drawing comparisons to previous leaders, she cited examples of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, President Nana Akufo-Addo, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramani Mahama, all of whom had to contest multiple times before securing victory.
“Former President Kufuor ran several times before winning. Nana Akufo-Addo lost in 2007, again in 2012, and finally won in 2016. Even Prof. Mills contested multiple times before becoming president. So why are they saying Ghanaians don’t want Dr. Bawumia? We reject such narratives,” she emphasized.
Safo also pushed back against attempts to suppress Bawumia’s supporters, affirming that every NPP member has the right to express their opinion on the party’s future leadership.
