60-Year-Old Farmer Dies After Allegedly Drinking Poisoned Water

Residents of Tano Odumase in the Agona District of the Ashanti Region are in shock following the mysterious death of a 60-year-old farmer, Opanin Kwabena Bonsu, who allegedly consumed poisoned water while working on his farm.

According to family members, Bonsu left for his farm on March 6, 2025, as usual. After working for some time, he felt thirsty and drank from a gallon he regularly used. Moments later, he began experiencing severe discomfort and attempted to make his way home while crying out for help.

Eyewitnesses who saw him in distress rushed to his aid and transported him to Kona Hospital for emergency care. He was later referred to Agona Government Hospital, where he was admitted. However, within minutes of arrival, he was pronounced dead.

“They took him to Kona Hospital for first aid, but his condition worsened, so they rushed him to Agona Government Hospital. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive,” recounted Auntie Akua, a relative of the deceased.

Suspicions of Foul Play

The family strongly believes Opanin Kwabena Bonsu was poisoned, alleging that an unknown individual may have tampered with his drinking water while he was working on the farm.

“We suspect someone who harbored ill intentions against him might have poisoned the water in his absence,” said Madam Leticia Sarfo, his elder sister.

Some community members share similar suspicions. While a few believe Bonsu may have had a dispute with someone, others suspect a contract killing.

“He was a humble and peaceful man with no known enemies. If this was intentional, then someone must have wanted him dead for a reason we don’t know,” a resident remarked.

Autopsy Confirms Poisoning

The Agona Government Hospital conducted an autopsy and confirmed that Bonsu’s death resulted from consuming poisoned water. However, as of now, the family has yet to report the case to the police.

“We are waiting for the right time to take the matter to the authorities,” a family member said.

Meanwhile, fear and uncertainty grip the Tano Odumase community, as residents demand a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the farmer’s tragic death.
