More Than 30 Persons Feared Dead As Boat Capsized On The Volta Lake

Report reaching our news desk has confirmed that more than thirty individuals are  feared dead in a capsized boat moving from Dzemeni to Havorkope in the Kwahu Afraim plains North District of the Eastern region .

The dishearten incident occurred on Thursday, 14th April, between the hours of 4pm to 5pm in the wake of sudden wind storm with weighty downpour on the way.

Speaking to journalists in an interview , the Assemblyman for the Area Mr. Gershon Akorlie, said three boats from the Havorkope set off from Dzemeni around 2pm in the early evening. Two of the boats showed up securely, however, one didn’t come. Upon further cross examination, that’s what they found out that, the third boat had capsized in the waterway.

Mr. Gershon Akorlie told journalists that, the rescue team got to the scene around 8pm – 9pm in the night where a few individuals on board were saved.

Explainjng further, he said, they can’t tell the complete number of individuals in the boat yet ,indicating eight (8) females, and four (4) guys were considered to be alive.

In the mean time, the rescue team had the option to establish an aggregate of seven (7) dead bodies who are on the whole females.

He indicated that a portion of individuals on board had the option to swim shorewards, while the rest can’t be found. The rescue team , as indicated by him is as yet searching for the rest of the dead bodies in the river .

Mr. Gershon Akorlie said, he formally reported the incident to the Ghana Police Service where the seven bodies found have been saved at the morgue in Asikuma.

He disclosed that , since the occurrence of the accident , no government officials including National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have connected with help.
