Gambia TRRC Finds Yahya Jammeh ,13 Others Criminally Liable Over Unlawful Killing Of 44 Ghanaians, 23 Other African Migrants

The Gambia Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, TRRC, has found former President Yahya Jammeh and 13 others criminally liable for the
unlawful killing, torture and enforced
disappearances of about 67 West African migrants, including about 44 Ghanaians and recommended their prosecution.

The Commission has also recommended the “setting up of a
joint international joint investigation team (Joint Forensic
Investigation Team) based in The Gambia” to, among other
things, “locate, exhume and conserve the remains of the victims
that may be found in those wells or graves.”

 

The Commission further recommended the payment of
D32, 400, 000 (Thirty-two million, Four Hundred Thousand
Dalasis, about $612, 000) to 54 victims who were tortured, unlawfully imprisoned, unlawfully killed or forced to disappear.

This was disclosed by Mr William Nyarko ,Coordinator Jamme2Justice Ghana Coalition and Executive Director ,Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability,ACILA at a press conference in Kumasi .

Mr William Nyarko, however, asked the Gambian Government and President Adama Barrow to consider increasing the amount of money from $612,000 to $15,000,000 to ensure the victims and their families are well catered for .
