The Member of Parliament for Tafo Constituency in the Ashanti region, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah has contended that the organizers of FixTheCountry protest did not have a clear-cut message to convey to Ghanaians.
According to him, there was no proper coordination regarding delivery of messages as far as fix the country protest was concerned
” You can go out to demonstrate, but as to what message you’re putting out there, is another thing altogether. Is it a message that should be able to shake the foundation of our democracy.?”
Hon Vincent Ekow Assafuah made this statement when he was speaking to FixTheCountry demonstration that was embarked on yesterday in Accra on TV3 New Day.
He argued that the leading members were missing the point, and they clearly demonstrated that they did not understand the issues.
Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah noted that he did not see the point as to why the leading members could cite an issue regarding the building of the Cathedral and accused government wrongly, whereas it was clear government had emphatically stated that it would not pump taxpayers’ money in the construction of the edifice.
” This is clearly the convenors did not understand the issue. The government have not taken money from the state to be used for the construction of the Cathedral, as these people are talking about.”
He questioned the statement by the leading members of FixTheCountry demonstration to make such a statement that Why was government using so much money for the construction of the cathedral whiles there were so many schools under trees.
” Clearly you do not understand the issues because the Cathedral is not being built from the state resources.”
He stressed that the government was only asking Ghanaians to donate to build the cathedral.
“The construction of the Cathedral was from the donation of Ghanaian people.”
Be it as it may, it should be pointed out that the organizers of FixTheCountry demonstration had put out several messages out there demanding government and the political leaders to perform without showing any mediocrity in their delivery to ensure the country was developed with jobs and infrastructural facilities, including ultra-modern hospitals and schools.
Yet, one message that should be well articulated by the leading members of the FixTheCountry demonstration should be a complete overhauling of the 1992 Constitution.
Although, some of them have indicated that they would solicit for one million signatures from Ghanaians to start initiating the move for government to buy into their demand.
I think this is a call in the right direction. However, there should be a consistent call and action to have the Constitution changed to the benefits of ordinary Ghanaians.
