Breaking News – El-Wak Recruitment Tragedy: GAF Reports Six Dead, Five in ICU, Twelve in Critical Condition

adminBy adminNovember 12, 2025Updated:November 13, 2025

By Alex Ababio

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that six people have lost their lives, five are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and twelve more remain in critical condition.

Incident Overview
The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday during the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at El-Wak Stadium. According to GAF, the stampede was triggered when a surge of applicants breached security barriers and forced their way into the stadium before the screening was scheduled to begin.
A total of 28 individuals were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment. Out of this number, six have died, five are in ICU and twelve are in critical danger.

High-Level Visit
The situation drew the attention of President John Dramani Mahama, who visited the 37 Military Hospital to receive first-hand information and offer assurance to the public. He was accompanied by officials including the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the Acting Defence Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson.

Casualty Details & Gender Note
While the names of the deceased have not yet been released, credible sources indicate that most of the deceased are female applicants.

Follow-Up Actions & Statement by GAF
The Ghana Armed Forces expressed deep condolences to the families of those killed and conveyed wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured. GAF also assured the public that it is taking immediate steps to review the safety protocols and ensure such a tragic event does not recur.
In light of the stampede, GAF temporarily suspended the recruitment exercise to allow a full safety review. The screenings for the Air Force, Navy and Army have been rescheduled.

Context & Contributing Factors
Observers point to the sheer volume of applicants and poor crowd-control planning as major contributory factors. Some reports state that internet connectivity issues at the venue added to delays and confusion which ultimately escalated the situation.
Additionally, the recruitment drive comes amid very high youth unemployment levels in Ghana, estimated at around 39 %, which places additional pressure on such exercises.

Why This Matters
This incident highlights critical shortcomings in logistical and crowd-management planning in large-scale recruitment events. The loss of life—six young job-seekers—underscores the risks posed when infrastructure, planning and communication fail under pressure. The fact that many applicants were desperate for stable employment gives this tragedy deeper socio-economic meaning.

What to Expect Next

A full investigation by GAF into operational failures and security breaches.

Possible reforms in how recruitment events are organized: better staggered entry, strengthened perimeter security, improved registration/internet systems.

Government attention on youth unemployment and the surge of applicants for national security service jobs.

Public demand for accountability for safety standards in large gatherings.
