Ahead of Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Scheme National Launch: Best District Farmer Warns Lack of Youth Capacity-Building Could Collapse the Project

The government is preparing to launch the pilot phase of its flagship poultry initiative, “Nkoko Nkitinkiti,” next month in the Northern Region.

However, prominent farmer Mr. Clement Adu Yeboah-Fordjuor — popularly known as Nana Green — is sounding a cautionary note ahead of the rollout. Nana Green, the 2017 Best Farmer for the Atwima Mponua District and CEO of Nyame Green Ventures in Mpasatia, Ashanti Region, urged the government to prioritize youth training before the program begins.

Speaking to Ghanaian Watch, Nana Green said: “If the youth who will benefit from this project are not properly trained before the rollout, the initiative could collapse. Some will even sell off the chicken and feed provided — just to buy an iPhone for fun.”

He noted that the project was first initiated under a previous NPP administration but failed to take off due to poor implementation of its fundamental objectives. “Despite its good intentions to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry and eggs and to boost local production, the earlier version failed because the youth involved weren’t adequately equipped,” Nana Green explained.

He, however, praised the current administration for reviving the program, which aims to support at least 55,000 households across the country and create sustainable youth employment.

“To make this work,” he advised, “the government must involve grassroots poultry farmers who can train these youth hands-on for at least six months. Experience is crucial. Without it, most youth will struggle and the project will eventually fail.”

He further called on the youth interested in participating to prepare themselves for serious learning under active farmers to ensure long-term success.

Nana Green also urged the government to remain impartial in selecting beneficiaries. “This project must not become a partisan tool,” he said. “Every hardworking Ghanaian youth deserves a fair opportunity to contribute to this vital national initiative.”
