Antoa Tragedy: One Dead, Two Critically Injured in Motorbike-Truck Collision

By Isaac Nsiah Foster

Antoa, March 18, 2025 – A tragic accident at Antoa in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region has left one person dead and two others in critical condition after an articulator truck collided with a motorbike.

The deceased, identified as 47-year-old Adwoah Badu, a well-known chop bar operator at Antoa and a native of Krobo, was reportedly returning home from work when the accident occurred. She was on a motorbike along with her 28-year-old assistant, Afiah, who is pregnant, and the rider, Kofi Acheampong, also known as “Obama.”

Eyewitness Accounts

According to an eyewitness, Maame Afiah Serwaah, the motorbike, which was overloaded, was moving at high speed from Antoa towards Krobo. “The rider jumped over a speed hump, lost control, and crashed into an oncoming articulator truck,” she recounted.

Other eyewitnesses reported that after losing control, the bike slipped, causing all three riders to fall onto the road. Tragically, the truck ran over Adwoah Badu, killing her instantly.

“It happened near the Adesina chief’s palace. Just last Saturday, another person lost their life at the same spot. Several accidents have occurred here due to the unmarked speed hump,” Maame Afiah Serwaah lamented.

Another witness, Afiah Boahemaa, confirmed that a similar incident had occurred earlier that day. “Another motorbike rider fell at the same spot. People laughed at him, but I warned them that this hump would cause a serious accident if not removed. And now, look at what has happened,” she said, shaking her head in frustration.

None of the three passengers on the motorbike were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. They were initially rushed to the Antoa Hospital before being referred to the Ejisu Government Hospital. Adwoah Badu, however, was later transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two survivors, Kofi Acheampong and Afiah, remain in critical condition at the Ejisu Government Hospital.

Adwoah Badu, a single mother of eight, leaves behind a grieving family.

Municipal Urban Roads Engineer’s Response

When contacted for comment, Dr. Alfred Amoak, the Kwabre East Municipal Urban Roads Engineer, denied any official involvement in the construction of the speed hump in question.

“No individual has the right to construct a speed hump without approval from the appropriate authorities. Doing so is a violation of road laws,” Dr. Amoak stated. “If residents have concerns about road safety, they must submit a formal request to the Municipal Urban Roads Engineering Department, which will escalate the issue to regional or national authorities if necessary.”

Dr. Amoak added that his department had not received any prior complaints about the Adesina speed hump, despite its involvement in multiple accidents. He assured that an investigation would be launched to identify those responsible for its illegal construction.

“I extend my condolences to the bereaved family of Adwoah Badu. We will ensure that those behind this unauthorized speed hump are held accountable,” he said.

Tensions Rise Among Youth

Meanwhile, tensions are mounting in Krobo as some irate youth threaten to take matters into their own hands. According to sources, they are planning to attack those responsible for the speed hump if it is not immediately removed.

A visit to the accident scene revealed that the hump had been partially destroyed in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Residents are calling on authorities to take urgent action to prevent further loss of lives on the road.
