The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the recent power disconnection at Kejetia Market, following a report by Ghanaian Watch titled ‘Dumsor’ Strikes Kejetia Market for Days, Wreaks Havoc – Traders Face Business Collapse, Drivers Lose Passengers.
According to a statement by Benjamin Antwi, Public Relations Officer for the ECG’s Ashanti West Regional branch, the situation at Kejetia Market was not a general power outage but a deliberate disconnection due to outstanding debts owed to the company.
“Affected traders were not experiencing a power outage; rather, they were disconnected from the national grid due to their indebtedness to ECG,” Mr. Antwi explained in a response posted on the KNUST URO Media platform, which Ghanaian Watch intercepted.
He further urged the media to accurately reflect the situation, stating: “Please let’s amend the story to reflect the facts on the ground. They were disconnected last week, and today their leadership visited ECG to engage us.”
Mr. Antwi disclosed that the Kejetia Market leadership had made a partial payment of GH₵330,000 out of the GH₵2.3 million debt, with further commitments expected within the week. He confirmed that based on these engagements, power restoration was likely by Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
