Three-Day Protest Demanding the Release of Anti-Galamsey Activists Begins Today

adminBy adminOctober 3, 2024

By Alex Ababio

The protest march will commence at Legon Okponglo and proceed to the Black Star Square in Accra.

The demonstration seeks to advocate for the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters who were arrested and detained by the police a week ago.

Organized under the banners of “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” the event also aims to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining, or galamsey, a persistent environmental and social challenge in Ghana.

Earlier this week, the police approved the planned route for the march, which includes: Legon Stadium – Okponglo Traffic Light – Shiashie/Standard Board Traffic Light – Shangri La – Airport Traffic Light – Association International School – National Service Secretariat – Castle Kawukudi – Kanda Highway – Accra High School Junction – Electoral Commission Office – Ridge – Ridge Hospital – AU Roundabout – Parliament – Osu Cemetery – Accra Sports Stadium – Independence Square.

Strong mobilization efforts on social media have generated significant attention, with thousands of participants expected to join the protest.

The demonstration aims to highlight both the detention of the activists and the ongoing struggle against illegal mining throughout the country.
