Ghana Armed Forces Denies Coup Allegations

adminBy adminAugust 24, 2024

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) categorically refutes recent allegations suggesting a potential coup, as asserted by Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG). Dr. Akwetey referenced past press conferences in 2016 and 2020, insinuating that GAF might intervene should electoral violence exceed the Ghana Police Service’s capabilities.

In response, GAF issued a statement clarifying its position: “We’ve never declared any intention to stage a coup through press conferences or otherwise,” affirmed a spokesperson. “There are no plans within GAF to undertake such actions.”

Highlighting its role as a supportive entity to the Ghana Police Service upon request, GAF emphasized its unwavering commitment to democratic principles. “We stand firm against any unlawful attempts to seize power,” the statement iterated.

Furthermore, GAF urged civil society organizations (CSOs) and the media to refrain from using its name in manners that could heighten political tensions. The military underscored its anticipation for a peaceful December 7 election while cautioning against associating military presence with actions that could escalate political discord within the nation.

The statement concluded with GAF’s reaffirmation of its pivotal role in safeguarding democratic processes and maintaining national stability.
