2024 Election Alert: Asantehene Urges Ghanaians to Safeguard Ghana’s Democracy

By Daniel Frimpong

With the nation preparing for the imminent presidential and parliamentary elections slated for December 7, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has sounded a call to arms for vigilance in safeguarding the democratic process.

Commencing the celebration of his 25th anniversary since ascending to the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool, he stressed the pivotal role of upholding a stable environment.

The Asantehene emphasized that such tranquility enables citizens to make enlightened decisions for the advancement of the nation.

During his speech on Sunday, May 12, he highlighted the importance of preserving democracy amidst the political fervor accompanying electioneering.

“This year marks yet another election cycle. Our political leaders have already embarked on campaign trails, with many months of intense campaigning ahead.

“Given our past experiences, it is imperative that we ensure the preservation of our democracy,” he asserted.

He continued, “Nevertheless, we must remain vigilant, as we cannot afford to be complacent. We must be vigilant to prevent anything that may disrupt the electoral process.

“People require a conducive environment where they can make informed choices in the best interest of the nation,” he affirmed.

He implored the populace to stay vigilant and thwart any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

Let’s Restore Environment from Devastation Caused by Galamsey

In his momentous address, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also passionately emphasized the urgent need to heal the environmental wounds inflicted by illicit mining activities, commonly known as ‘galamsey’.

He stressed the necessity to eradicate galamsey through every possible means.

The Asantehene’s words carried a profound sense of duty, urging the present generation to respect and conserve the environmental legacy left by their ancestors.

“Our foremost priority should be the restoration of our environment from the devastation caused by galamsey. We cannot be the generation that squanders the most gracious inheritance bestowed upon us by our predecessors to satisfy the greed of a few wrongdoers. We must defeat this menace at all costs,” he declared.”
